I read an interesting article this weekend called Motherhood and the Demise of Western Society. The basic premis of the article is that women who want to be “more than just moms” is a bad thing. He wraps it up in a nice shell about how society expects women to work outside the home, but there is an undertone of blame pointed right at the mothers.
I’m a stay at home mom and I love it. I could list 50,000 great reasons why I choose to stay home. But that’s the catch, I choose to stay home. Often articles such as these reflect the idea that the choice should be taken away, that all women should return to the “Leave it To Beaver’ ideals and somehow life would be better. while I admit there is a lot of pressure on moms, especially those who are poor and/or minority to hand their kids to someone else to raise while they work, I don’t see swinging the pendulum back the other way will help. There has to be some middle ground. Give motherhood more respect, sure. But don’t claim that mother’s who choose to work are destroying the fabric of our society.
