McEwwww

It seems that everyone is talking about the new study that came out showing how much kids can be influenced by packaging and marketing. Namely, by McDonalds packaging and marketing. It seems that we can convince kids that anything tastes better when we wrap it in familiar packaging. Even carrots seem to taste better when wrapped in the golden arches.

Children, ages 3 and 5, were presented with an assortment of identical foods, half in McDonald’s packaging, half in unmarked packaging. The kids were then asked which tasted better. An overwhelming majority said the foods labeled “McDonald’s” tasted best.

There are so many sad things we can get from this. That kids this young have already been influenced by marketing to such a strong degree, that they are too young to understand the marketing that is being pushed upon them, and that they eat McDonalds. Ewwwww Thanks to limited TV watching my sons have no clue that a McDonalds even exists, which thankfully means no begging to eat there. Which is good because that saves me from having to say no.

What can we conclude from this data? At the very least, we can say that by the age of 3, many of our children are already heavily influenced by marketing. At worst, we can say we are warping kids’ minds and creating an army of brainwashed, chicken-nugget popping zombies.
