I have wanted to learn to knit for years but have never worked up the courage to. I’ve always known how to crochet, but it was something that I hated because it caused cramping and pain in my hands. I worried that knitting might be more of the same. Finally my knitting friends convinced me to give it a try and I was pleased to say that so far I haven’t had any pain. Frustration, but no pain. Though I have only just started knitting today, but I sat for a solid hour and practised the knit stitch over and over again. So far so good. Tomorrow I’ll attempt to purl and see how that goes. Who knows, by the end of next week I may be a knitting addict.
I have begun feeding my new passion by looking up free patterns online. Not only are there hundreds of cute ideas, there are some that kids can do as well. In fact Waldorf schools encourage kids learning handwork such as knitting. They start with simple finger knitting and move on to needle knitting. You can find several books on knitting for kids and even buy special kits that show kids how to do simple knitting projects. One of my favorite sites that is loaded with information right now is Knitting With Children. There you will find so much great information on children knitting.
Of course being a mom doesn’t mean I have to share my new knitting love with my kids. With so many fun things out there to knit and so many great free patterns out there I have enough to keep all the knitting to myself. OK, so I’ll toss them a scarf or a pair of socks now and then. See, I’m not completely heartless.
