Washing clothes in my house used to be a warzone. First there’s the man of the house and his obsession with clean, clean, clean. On the other side is me, environmentalist at heart and frugal to the core. In the middle we have two boys who can get theirs clothes filthy within minutes.
So what ever we washed clothes with had to be tough enough to get out the stains, but gental enough not to fde out or ruin the clothes. It had to work good enough to satisfy Mr. Clean, but not be a poisonous chemical that would hurt the kids or the environment. And in all of that it had to cost as little as possible. You can see how picking the right cleaning agent could be a problem.
So what did we finally go with? The old standards of course. What did our great grandparents clean with before there were 50 thousand different cleaners to choose from? Baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice. I know it sounds too easy but it really isn’t. Dirty clothes just take a dash of baking soda and a splash of vinegar in the washer and they come out clean and beautiful. Even after frequent washings. And both baking soda and vinegar are safe, non-toxic, and cost pennies at the store. We’re all happy. In fact I can go on to use those to clean almost anything in my house. I’ve kicked harsh cleaners to the curb and just use these cheap, safe, and non-toxic “old fashioned” cleaning options. Presto, clean house!

I do the same thing! We switched to natural cleaners when SHiloh started complaining her hands burned when she was cleaning the sink. I add a little essential oil of tangerine and rose otto for scent..a very fresh combination.
*nods* and just to further the flame of the enviromentalist…did you know that all those cleansers with scents in them mess with female hormone cycle and actually can (and do) stop the fertility cycle and cause some women to lose their moon! I’ve been meaning to tell you that FOREVER cuz I’d love to see one of your articles about it but never got around it it. So there ya go!
