CNNMoney.com has announced the 10 best small towns to live in. They focused on things such as economic opportunity, good schools, safe streets, things to do and a real sense of community. Small town charm is winning out against the bright lights of the big city it seems as more families want to raise children somewhere smaller, safer, and more connected.
If you already live in one of the 10 towns listed then you probably have a lot to be proud of. But if you’re like me and living in a small town that didn’t make the cut you may be looking around wondering what your community has to offer. Small towns are truely made by the people. Because of the smaller populations everyone seems to know everyone else. Living in a small town can also mean that anyone can enact a change.
If your’re missing something from your local community why not see what you can do about it? Start a community garden in an empty lot. You can get your neighbors involved and you all can reap the benefits at harvest time, as well as grow a closer community spirit. Or put together a community family fun day. Look at what your small town or community needs and what it has to offer. There are hundreds of ideas you can use to create something that will bring people together and benefit your community as a whole. And can make you feel pretty good too.
Working to build a great community is something that everyone who lives there should do. But those with kids have an added drive. Working to have a wonderful place for your kids to grow and live affects them positively for the rest of their lives. The togetherness, the postive influences, and the relationships gained from a close community can shape their own ideas and values as they grow.

it’s so interesting to see what makes the cut on these kinds of lists.
my town’s not on there, but milton, ma, is the next town over from where i grew up and i still have friends there. it’s a nice place, for sure, but they don’t talk about the boston traffic–which DOES “get you” living there.
These are beautiful suggestions! You’re right, if we all do what we can then it is possible to improve our towns. I think that, with enough involvement, we could even improve our cities.
