I hope I didn’t scare anyone away with my post yesterday on discipline. As a parent I’m always growing and changing and trying to find new ways to work with my sons. As I find new ideas and thoughts I’ll share them here in hopes of getting some great conversation going. Itnever hurts to look at new ideas and think aobut how other people choose to do things. You never know when you’ll be inspired or find something you want to find out more about.
I’m not the only one thinking about discipline and kids. Azuroo shared her thoughts on discipline now that her daughter is more mobile and into everything. I remember when my oldest was into every little thing in my house. In fact I’m reliving that now that my youngest is not just walking but also climbing up on everything. The table, the couch, the coffee table, and anything else that looks like a good place to climb. Which means I am now rethinking where I put things that I want out of reach of little hands.
Rebecca of Graceful Parenting has a great series of posts on spanking as a Christian parent. I love how she explains the use of the “rod” not as a tool to hit with but as a tool to guide. She explains that:
The Hebrew word _”shebet” translated “rod” in the English literally means “a shepherd’s rod or walking stick”.
I’ve been lucky enough to have a dear friend who is also the wife of the Baptist pastor. They teach in their church that the “rod” is not for hitting children with, that sparing the rod has little to do with spanking. They point new parents to Dr. Sear’s thoughts on spanking, which include an interpritation on the biblical references to the rod. “Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” – Psalm 23:4
