A Mom’s Thoughts on the Virginia Tech Shootings

I know some time has passed now since the tragic day at Virginia Tech and I have been listening to some of the discussion going on about it.  Everything from reasons that guns should be outlawed to why everyone should own one for their personal protection.  Everyone wants to know how we can make sure this never happens again.

I don’t know many facts about the boy that murdered these innocent people but something in my gut tells me that he too just wanted love and acceptance like the rest of us do.  Yes there was probably something mentally off with him but I just get an image of him seeing himself as an “outcast” or maybe the weird one who nobody wanted to be friends with.  After being labeled that way for so long whether it’s a label put on by others or one put on by one’s self, you start to believe it in your spirit that you are no good and no one likes you.  This boy was obviously very angry and hurt and apparently believed a lie that everyone hated him.

I am not in any way justifying his actions.  He committed unexcusable crimes which I believe he is justly paying for now on a level we can’t even imagine.  What I am learning though through this tragic event is how much more we need to reach out and love our neighbors, our families, even our enemies.  Show love to those that annoy you, think differently than you, or even persecute you.  Don’t let anger control your actions.  Our world has seen to0 much of the sad cycle of revenge.  Let’s teach our children to reach out in love.  We might just change the world.
