Phone Etiquette for Kids

phone.jpgLately my 5-year-old has insisted on answering the telephone.  It just happened overnight a couple weeks ago and now we refer to her as Miss “I’LL GET IT!!!!!!!!”At first I thought it was kind of cute and I just couldn’t believe how fast she was growing up but now the cuteness is wearing off a little.  It’s ok when a family member is on the other end of the phone but if it is someone that Lilly doesn’t know, man are they in for some chatter.  By the time she gets through interrogating them with “What’s your name? Where do you live?  Are you Mommy’s friend or Daddy’s friend?” kinds of questions and I actually get handed the phone they are ready to hang up!  And Lil has that phone strapped to her little hip at all times.  Most of the time I don’t even hear it ring.

So I suppose it is time for some lessons on phone manners.  According to the Emily Post Institute children need to clearly say hello, identify who they are, and be able to take a message without dominating the conversation.

I will have to practice this with my daughter but until she gets it down, maybe I’ll start screening my calls and save the 5-year-old interrogations for the telemarketers.

    Hello, hello, is mommy there……?

I’ve used that before. I had one carpet cleaning company that would call every night, so I would let Kate pick up the phone and walk around babbling to them…and pushing buttons on the phone. After two nights, they gave up!
