Becoming a Praying Parent

I pray for my children daily but flipping through this book reminded me of the power and significance of what those prayers really mean. Some of you who are like myself sometimes get caught in the habit of the quick prayer that sounds like this, “Protect my child today and please let him/her obey and not give me a headache. Amen.” I would dare say that this is better than nothing but if we really took the time and realized how important it is that our children are covered in prayer I think our lives would go a little smoother and theirs as well. Think about it, we as moms might be the ONLY people praying for our children. Some of you who are like myself sometimes get caught in the habit of the quick prayer that sounds like this, “Protect my child today and please let him/her obey and not give me a headache. I really like this book by Omartian especially because at the end of each chapter is a written prayer for different subjects that can help you get started in this daily prayer habit and also spawn other ideas and prayers for specific things you are dealing with with each of your children. The chapters range from praying that your child is protected from harm, that they feel loved and accepted, that they resist rebellion, freedom from fear, to avoiding drugs and other harmful addictions There are 30 chapters in all.

I have a friend who just recently found out that her high school son is a drug addict. Their family lives in our neighborhood, goes to our church, and just always seemed to have it all together. My friend, the boy’s mother, is of course shocked and devestated and she told me the other day, “When my boys were little I never once thought this would be a possibility. I always prayed for them but never got into specifics such as praying against a drug addiction. If I could go back and do that part over I would. There is such power in prayer.” That really was a wake-up call for me. We of course are praying for their family now and I believe that they will come out of this storm but if you are a mom of young kids let’s not wait until our kids are in some kind of trouble to start praying, let’s start now.

Check out The Power of a Praying Parent. It’s worth your time.
