Traveling with Tots for Thanksgiving

traveling-for-thanksgiving.jpgI LOVE Thanksgiving.  Other than Christmas it’s my favorite holiday of the year.  It’s a great time to eat good food, spend time with family, and really be grateful for all the things, big and small, that God has blessed you with.  This year my husband and I are taking our 5 year old and 2 year old on an eight hour road trip to Maryland.I’ve been married for 6 years and this trip has always been one of our traditions at Thanksgiving.  We are going to Hagerstown where my husband grew up and where almost all of his family lives.  We get to see aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.  Last year was the first year we didn’t travel for the holiday so this year will be even extra special.

I do realize that putting two small children in the car for 8 hours is not the most enjoyable experience.  Isn’t that what sedatives were made for??  KIDDING!  I have learned that by packing both the girls individual bags of goodies works miracles.  I normally fill them with something fun that they can pull out each hour, so for an eight hour trip I’ll pack them 8 small things to do.  A few good ideas are coloring books, movies (for those of us who are lucky enough to have DVD players in our vehicles), travel games, books, music, and of course snacks.   An inexpensive place to check for travel toys is Family Dollar.  I also found some great items for traveling with kids on Amazon.com.  And I never forget to pack a couple little blankets and snuggle toys for naptime.

Once we reach our destination it should be smooth sailing.  Oh but wait, I forgot about the part when the kids have difficulty sleeping in unfamiliar beds, overstimulation from all the holiday activity, getting completely off nap and bedtime schedules and routines, etc.  Another blog for another day……  😉
